Week In Review: Sochi Slopestyle Gets Rowdy and Sun Valley Lift Burns
NWS announces avalanche warnings, Sean Pettit edit, and Vail lift lines visible from outer space
Sochi slopestyle too rowdy? Skiers don’t think so.
So everybody finally made it to Sochi and now the complaints are really rolling in. “The course isn’t well built,” “The jumps are crazy,” “It’s too gnarly out there.” Finnish favorite Torgstein Horgmo already broke his collarbone in training, and Shaun White pulled out before qualifying even began.
That being said, the skiers seem psyched.
“Well, the Olympics built the biggest and craziest slope course ever built…Bravo!” says stylish Kiwi Jossi Wells via Twitter.
“Course is hugeeee,” added American Joss Christensen.
From the limited video we’ve seen, the jumps seem super poppy, allowing for more airtime, and who knows, maybe a little future spinning.
Sun Valley lift burns
A fire destroyed a Sun Valley lift and shut down part of the resort this week according to The Ketchum Keystone. The top station of the Flying Squirrel Chair caught fire early Saturday morning and sustained irreparable damages. While the lift was rarely in use after the opening of the Challenger Lift, the area it serviced was closed a few days to investigate and clear the area. Sun Valley does not have any plans currently to replace the lift.
National Weather Service to announce avalanche warnings
While other weather outlets were busy naming winter storms, the National Weather Service took a progressive step last week by announcing their first avalanche warning. The NWS will retransmit forecasts and warnings made by the U.S. National Forest Service Avalanche Centers in an important move to save lives and protect property. Good on ya, guys and gals. Here’s a clip from the first warning for the Reno/Tahoe area.
Chris Logan and Parker White debut The Big Picture
The webisode brainchild of Chris Logan and Parker White, The Big Picture, finally made its season debut this week. The takeaway? Chris Logan really likes skiing in sweatshirts. Well, that and the fact that he crushes some burly pillow lines, White skis some mean urban, and the two have a cast of talented friends that help get this link securely added to my Favorites tab.
Sean Pettit rereleases 2013 season edit for new site
Hot and fresh out the kitchen, Sean Pettit released a remix of his 2013 season under his new production company, Super Proof Inc this week. A little bit skiing, a little bit cinema, Remember to Fly is an interesting switch-up from normal edits that will help add a little zest to your workday.
Vail lift lines visible from space…wait, really?
After the latest snowstorm blanketed the I-70 corridor, the clouds parted long enough for satellites to capture Vail’s lift lines from space according to Double Black Designs. Okay, so upon further investigation I kind of got played, but I have to admit, it’s a little too believable. You almost got me Double Black, almost.
