What Is Ian Compton DoING?

No cell service, no problem in the Green Mountain State

Ian Compton, Vermont

InterviewING: by Mike Rogge

(This summer, we asked athletes what they’re up to, and what’s been catching their eyes, ears, stomachs, and hearts. Here’s what Ian Compton had to say. Check out Ian MacIntosh and Matt Walker’s answers.)

WatchING

I Netflixed Thor and it exceeded my expectations. So epic. That’s all I gotta say.

ReadING
The last book I really read was The Tao of Pooh by Bejamin Hoff. It explains the basic principles of Taoism through Winnie the Pooh characters. It’s really neat and there are a few in the collection. Other than those I only really skim books. I try a bunch but then my focus fades. Right now I am giving Jurassic Park a go.

PlayING
I live in Northern Vermont so there’s not much to do other than what the wooded landscape has to offer. There are plenty of janky and fun Vermont skate parks scattered around and that’s where I spend a good portion of my time. I’m in the process of building a bowl in the field by my house. I have it all dug out, I just need to lay some concrete with my friends. Skate or Die.

ConsumING
I got a sick boombox off Amazon. I haven’t messed around with Internet shopping in a while so I went crazy. When don’t you need some badass piece of plastic that takes eight big ass batteries to blast music? Thanks Amazon.com.

EatING and DrinkING
The best part about Vermont is knowing where your food comes from. There are a lot of local co-ops in my town so I tend to buy local. The coolest part is getting my milk from a dude down the street who has a squad of sweet cows. It’s raw milk so it takes time to get used to, but you get to say what up to the animals that gave it to you.

PartyING
I went camping with fellow Vermonters Parker White, Ben Grunow and friends. We got boated out to the campsite and had a killer view of the lake from our spot. It was a glorious lake right by Stowe, Vermont, and it was during a hot spell so it couldn’t have been better. The best parties happen in the woods.

TweetING
I actually don’t have a smart phone or Twitter so I haven’t been on my game. I don’t get cell service at my house either so I stay away from cell phones in general. It’s wild to some people, but I hate phones so damn much. The only paper I wrote in college was about how much I hated them and I got an A-minus.

ListenING

Here are the five tracks I’m listening to:
Sly and The Family Stone – Everyday People: This song makes me feel bright right away. It’s a happy, upbeat day starter.
John Parker Compton -Yorkshire Pines: My dad has a bunch of killer tunes but this one really hits me. (eds note: Ian, tell your dad to get his jams on the internet )
Mazzy Star – Fade Into You: This is a wicked epic slow song and there’s an even better snowboard part to it. I hope everyone knows it.
Quasimoto – Shroom Music: I like a little rap to get me going.
The Rolling Stones – Tops: Rock and roll must be the constant in your life.
