Red Bull Cancels Cold Rush for 2013

Event’s future uncertain

After six incarnations, the Red Bull Cold Rush, which crowned champions Dane Tudor and Rachael Burks last year, will not return for the 2013 season.

Information from Red Bull about the event’s future revealed only nebulous hints, typical of the brand’s tight PR ship. Exhaustion of the Silverton, Colorado, venue was only a “minor consideration” among a host of others, according to a Red Bull event spokesperson. They plan on using a Cold Rush-free 2013 to “potentially” find a new venue for the event in 2014 or later. Suspending big events is nothing unusual for Red Bull, who has hosted the Red Bull Rampage mountain bike contest intermittently over the past 10 years. The brand also suggested that if an alternative venue warrants a new course design or contest format altogether, they’ll consider it.

While North America will have one less innovative freeski event on the calendar this winter, two of Red Bull’s signature European freeski events—France’s Linecatcher and Austria’s PlayStreets—will continue this year, with PlayStreets taking Cold Rush’s spot on NBC’s Red Bull Signature Series program. Both those contests are managed independently by the in-country Red Bull office, and both still “make sense for their market” according to Red Bull.

So the features they built at Silverton should logically be opened to the public now right? ;)
