HIKE & RIDE - The winning clips
The Red Bull Hike is not about the best run or the best jump—it’s about the best four minutes. Somewhere in the Swiss Alps the riders have 48 hours to shoot their film. Then they go to the editing studio in Zurich, where they have exactly 24 hours to cut their film material and produce a 4-minute clip. And afterwards? They go directly to the premiere party. The final winner of the film prize is not decided by an undiscerning film critic, but rather decided by the riders among themselves.

10 MINUTES WITH: Jess McMillan
Jess McMillan isn’t actually single, but if she was, her personal ad might read something like this: 28-year-old, blond, SWF; loves chocolate chip cookies and Guns and Roses songs; looking for a SM who can keep up on skis.

10 MINUTES: With Jonny Law
In 2004, Jonny Law’s skiing career was about to take off. He had won the 2003 U.S. Freeskiing Championships at Snowbird, finishing second at Worlds, and had started working with Teton Gravity Research. Then Law, a Nova Scotia resident, shattered his femur when he underestimated a line in Alaska and tumbled 1500 feet. Law now lives in Squamish, British Columbia. His recovery has been long. Now that he is finally skiing without pain, his approach to the sport has changed dramatically.

10 MINUTES: With Andy Mahre
Andy Mahre drove down from his hometown of Yakima, Washington to make a few summer runs on Mt. Hood, but surprisingly, he wasn’t hitting the park like his had been doing all summer. Instead, he was making laps on race skis with the racers and tourists.

10 MINUTES: With Chris Collins
Chris Collins grew up killing it at Anthony Lakes, a small resort about a 45-minute drive from his home in Eastern Oregon’s Baker City.

10 MINUTES: With Colin Puskas
The 26-year-old Calgary native has positioned himself in Banff, an idyllic base for a guy with a sled, a truck, and a desire to ski a new mountain range every month. Though he’s skied extensively in North and South America, Colin’s happiest at home in the Canadian Rockies.

Eric Iberg - Interview
Last summer, when Eric Iberg was putting together a resume, its length made him laugh. Since moving westward from Minnesota when he was 18, he’s filmed for every Poorboyz movie since 13, and has been a part of every Plehouse film. In all, he's directed five films. Last year, Pep Fujas, Andy Mahre, and Eric Pollard approached Iberg to direct Idea, a film to be released this fall

10 MINUTES: With Ian McIntosh
Ian McIntosh has earned nicknames like Big Mac and Mac Attack for a reason: The 24-year-old, Whistler, B.C.-based freeskier charges harder than almost anyone out there.

10 MINUTES: With Jessica Sobolowski
Jessica Sobolowski’s season ended abruptly last January when she blew out her knee while filming in Utah. But it’s not like Jessica to sit around and mope.

10 MINUTES: With Kaya Turski
Last winter, about mid-season, Kaya Turski decided she wanted to ski again. At 18, it had been about ten years since she had clicked-in to a pair of skis.

10 MINUTES: With Michelle Parker
She’ll be everywhere skiers can still ski in these months—Mt. Hood, Whistler, a water ramp in Quebec, and New Zealand—before settling down again with her family in Lake Tahoe. We caught up with her in Squaw last week…

10 MINUTES: With Nico Melendez
The stickers are ubiquitous, plastered from Washington State to Hokkaido, Japan, but especially in and around Big and Little Cottonwood Canyon. The symbol is a levitating figure with six outstretched arms, each presumably ready to tackle a different task—filming, photography, clothing design, graphic design, and of course skiing and snowboarding.

10 MINUTES: With Sammy Carlson
Sammy Carlson has been skiing since he was four. He’s gone from small jumps in the family cabin’s driveway to sticking switch bio 1080s in big comps. Now the shaggy-haired 17-year-old balances the life of a high school student (attending classes in the fall and online classes in the winter) and that of a pro skier. When he isn’t traveling the world, he’s at home in Tigard, OR, which is where we caught up with him…

4FRNT DEADBOLT 816
Entering its third year commercially, 4FRNT’s Deadbolt has moved beyond the park-rat demographic to become a trusted freeride binding with brake widths for all skis. The Deadbolt 816, 614, and 412 share a 3D toe piece that releases vertically as well as laterally. Upward release is important to prevent ACL injuries in backward twisting falls. More skilled riders—especially ones landing backward—need not fret as this function can be locked out. All models share the same price regardless of DIN, a unique feature in the binding world.

4FRNT EHP
4FRNT co-founder Matt Sterbenz says Eric Hjorleifson needed about 20 versions of the EHP before he was happy with it. So it shouldn’t surprise anyone that Eric’s pro model line features three different skis. The 190 is the most traditionally shaped, the only true twin tip, and a great resort ski for bigger skiers. The 193 is made for fast assaults on big lines, and offers a squared-off and stiff tail, and an early-rise tip. The 186, meanwhile, is more of a tree ski, pressed flat with a tip and tail that rise like a true reverse-camber design which excels in deep powder and crud.

4FRNT MSP
When 4FRNT moved production from Canada to Europe, the MSP got a bit of a facelift. Most significant is a new dual radius sidecut (22.5 meters from tip to waist and 26 meters from waist to tail). This allows the ski to initiate turns easier while keeping stability at high speeds. 4FRNT also changed the vertical laminate of the core to increase torsional rigidity and switched from P-Tex to ABS sidewalls, both of which provide better edge hold.

4FRNT STL
The STL is 4FRNT’s do-anything park ski, and a great ride for people who split their time between the park and carving firm snow. Highlights include a core laminate pattern that concentrates heavier, more solid wood underfoot for durability, and lighter weight wood in the tips to reduce swing weight. If you’re looking for a competition pipe ski from 4FRNT, go for the TNK ($499), the Niklas Karlstrom model that has above-average stiffness for its class. This gives it more pop off the lip, and stability for landings.

4FRNT VCT
Lightweight and ultra-wide, the VCT is money if you spend most of your days plying the deep in the intermountain West, or if you’re looking for a durable, yet maneuverable touring ski. The VCT features a softer tip to stay afloat in deep snow, but a more rigid tail for landings. The durability comes from 4FRNT’s classic wood-core, vertical sidewall construction, and fully wrapped 2mm edges.

4FRNT WELCOMES: C.R. Johnson to the Family
4FRNT introduces C.R. Johnson as their new international team rider and part-owner. 4FRNT will introduce a new ski designed by Johnson in the 2008/09 season and a soft goods line will follow.

A lot of people do stupid things on skis. Anyone from Texas, for example. ARMADA ANT
Anthony Boronowski designed a burly, wood core board in his 191cm pro model. With Tony’s personally designed graphics and stiff flex, the ANT is a great option for the straighlining, big-mountain guru, or Rocky Mountain ripper.

ARMADA AR6
A slimmer version of the ARV with a hardwood center in the core, the moderately stiff AR6 is equally adept all-mountain and the park. The modified wood core provides durability and a variable flex pattern highlighted by carbon fiber stringers in the tail creating liveliness and torsional stiffness.

ARMADA ARG
The wood-cored ARG, or Gordo, returns as one of the more innovative reverse-camber, reverse-sidecut skis in this ever-growing category. Yes, it has five different dimensions with a tapered tip and tail and a standard sidecut underfoot. Although the traditional sidecut isn’t super noticeable, the ski pivots easily in tight conditions. At times, the shovel seems too narrow in chunky, heavy conditions found inbounds, but shines in the backcountry.

ARMADA ARV
The original ARV is the only ski remaining from Armada’s first year. Advertised as an all-mountain park ski, the ’07-08 wood-cored ARV lost some weight while adding stiffness. The result is better stability at high speeds and increased maneuverability on the snow and in the air.

ARMADA ARW
This year, Grete Eliassen slightly tweaked construction to make the ARW even more of a women’s specific park performance ski. She started off by trimming weight and giving the ARW yoga-like flex with carbon fiber stringers and fiberglass laminates. With an improved seven series base, the ARW is tough on the outside but softer inside, just like Eliassen.

ARMADA JP VS JULIEN
This ski is more versatile than you would think despite its soft flex. With minimal camber, JP Auclair and Julien Regnier designed a poppy, wood-cored ski for use all over the mountain—not just backcountry booters. But, if you do want to boost and stomp it fakie, you'll appreciate a tail that's 10mm higher than the tip.
