Whistler’s energy can be felt on every inch of its 8,171 acres, especially around Spanky’s Ladder on Blackcomb, the Peak Chair on Whistler, and backcountry zones like Fissile Peak, Decker Mountain, and Disease Ridge. The upper half of the mountain is definitely where you want to stay. If it’s sunny, go for Blackcomb’s Chainsaw Ridge or Whistler’s Cirque for pucker steeps. If it’s “ping-pong,” Ruby, Diamond, Garnet, and Sapphire Bowls offer long, varied, and hectic lines. Don’t expect everything to be overly signed and roped, because this is Canada, not the land of lawsuits, eh? If the light is so flat you don’t know which way is up, just go to CBC trees, or one of the resort’s six terrain parks. Another spiritual experience is the cheeseburger at Split’s Grill (one of the best deals in town, besides the day-old basket at Ingrid’s). Feeling schwanky? Go to Zen Whistler Creekside for sushi.
What’s New:
The Peak to Peak Gondola—a Euro-style, record-breaking gondola connecting the mid-way lodges of Whistler and Blackcomb—opens in December 2008.
Inside Line:
Check out Whistler in the late spring, when a powder day on the upper mountain can lead to a day in the Mountain Bike Park the next.
