Though embroiled in a property dispute, The Canyons is hoping its new owners, Talisker, a private investment firm from Canada, can help refocus skiers’ attention back to the mountain. Which continues to grow and improve each season. A gigantic area filled with excellent north-facing glades, immaculate high-speed groomers, and some of the best backcountry access in the state, The Canyons is among the more underappreciated resorts in the Wasatch. Head up to the never-crowded Ninety-nine 90 lift, where skier’s left you will find the area’s best vertical and most challenging terrain. At the top of this lift is a short bootpack up to a backcountry gate, leading to wild untouched snow. Numerous tours await out the gate, but bring your avalanche safety gear. Don’t be lulled into complacency due to its proximity to the resort.
Whats New:
The Tombstone to Iron Mountain quad will carry skiers over a half mile across the resort, eliminating a long traverse at the end of the day.
Inside Line:
Utah residents, with valid I.D. can get a season pass (called the Cherry Picker), with blackout dates, for as low as $199. It’ll help free-up cash for lunches at the Lookout Cabin. Try the cheeseburger, if you can get your mouth around it.
