Located at the end of a box canyon in the southwest corner of Colorado, Telluride has never been easy to get to. But with the resort adding yet more high-alpine terrain to its already full bounty, there’s never been a better time to make the trip.
Over the last two winters, Telluride has continued to open terrain in the shadow of Palmyra Peak and within the steep powder-haven of Black Iron Bowl. First it was guide-only skiing. Then last year, Palmyra and Black Iron Bowl was opened for hike-to access, a move that provided another 200 acres. Now, the resort is tacking on a poma lift to access Revelation Bowl, the previously closed area directly off the backside of Gold Hill and Chair 14. The poma lift will provide 800 vertical feet of open bowl skiing, but it also eliminates the hike to the backcountry zenith of Bear Creek. This could get interesting from a safety-standpoint because Bear Creek, which is out of bounds and not controlled, has treacherous avalanche terrain. Rule of thumb: Don’t go if you don’t know.
With the addition of Revelation Bowl, Telluride has expanded by nearly 400 acres, all of it dramatic and high altitude (Gold Hill tops out at 12,255 feet). The resort’s vertical drop is now one of the largest in North America at 4,425 feet, with 3,845 feet lift-served.
What’s New:
After shredding Revelation, shack up at the New Sheridan Hotel, which is getting a major remodel. Originally built in 1895, this charming landmark sits in the center of Telluride and is on the National Trust for Historic Hotels of America.
Inside Line:
The Gold Hill Chutes 6-10 require about 50 minutes of hiking, including a short period where you are outside the ski area boundary before re-entering. Though the hike may be long, the turns are scenery are worth it. Bring your avie gear.
