Mount Mansfield dominates the horizon in Northern Vermont. From above-treeline chutes and waterfall hucks, to secret tree shots cut by cunning locals, Mansfield’s ski areas—Stowe and Smugglers’ Notch—offer some of the East’s best terrain and snow. But that’s where the similarities end. Legendary Stowe Mountain Resort lies on the east side of Mansfield and spills over onto neighboring Spruce Mountain. Snow falls deep at Stowe—374 inches last season—and there’s terrain for every taste: tight trees with mandatory airs, hike-to chutes above treeline, and steep groomers. Sure choices include the famous Front Four trails (for posterity), Bypass, and Chin Clip.
If Stowe is the supermodel, Smugglers’ Notch is the girl next door—almost as pretty and way more relaxed. “Smuggies” is a small ski area with big terrain. Runs like Upper FIS and Liftline flow directly fall line, lined by glades. Madonna Mountain’s Shakedown trees are a sure bet on powder day, and there are prized stashes tucked all over.
What’s New:
The deluxe Stowe Mountain Lodge opened at the base of Spruce Peak in June. Dirtbags beware—or go to Smuggies, where not a lot ever changes.
Inside Line:
At Stowe, just look up. Head out of bounds—with the proper gear, knowledge and a partner—for alpine destinations like the Chin and the Nose.
