A not-so-secret secret, Snowbasin remains empty compared to their more popular brethren down the road in Salt Lake City. Many skiers and snowboarders avoid the crowds of the Cottonwood Canyon’s ski areas and now make the 40-mile drive north from SLC to Snowbasin, located on the west-facing aspect of Mount Ogden.
Although empty lift lines are nice, Snowbasin, a Sun Valley-owned resort, receives the same signature light and dry of the Wasatch and dishes out 2,500-foot runs comprised of steeps, cliffs, trees, lift-accessible backcountry and hike-to terrain—most notably, No Name Peak and 9,570-foot Mount Ogden. Hop on the John Paul Express quad at the base area with the swanky lodges (love the giant fireplaces) and then hop on the Mount Allen tram for a short ride to the top of the 2002 Olympic downhill course. Follow the ridgeline down to a quick bootpack up to 9,070-foot No Name for a thigh-burning descent and easy access to sweet backcountry to the north. Or go the complete opposite direction and head south to the Strawberry gondola, where cliffs, untouched bowls and chutes await below 9,370-foot Demoisy Peak.
Whats New:
A new high-speed quad from the base area.
Inside Line:
The nearby city of Ogden is slowly becoming more tolerable to live and socialize, but head to the small town of Hunstville for an après 3.2 beer and burger at the Shooting Star Saloon.
