Schweitzer has received its share of accolades as of late and deservedly so—it’s the most underrated ski area in North America. Lying at the southern end of the Selkirk Mountains in the Northern Idaho, Schweitzer Mountain Resort dishes out expansive bowls, tight tree skiing, perfect pitch, the best park in the Pacific Northwest, and unmatched beauty with views of Canada to the north, Glacier National Park to the east and the massive Lake Pend Oreille stretching out below.
The 2007-08 season marked the debut of the Basin Express quad from the 4,000-foot base area, which relieved stress on the rest of the mountain and spread more skiers around the huge frontside and backside bowls. Plus, the new Lakeview triple chair, replacing an old double, accesses the double-blacks of the South Bowl.
Once you’re finished spinning a few laps on Upper Sam’s and lines skier’s right of The Face accessed by the Lakeview triple, head over to the Great Escape quad. Once at the top of Schweitzer, skate over to the North Bowl of the backside and point ’em fall line on the steeps of Misfortune and Whiplash or cruise down the Great Divide to Caboose or the gladed trees of J.R.
Whats New:
Remember how Thanksgiving used to be the standard date for opening day? Schweitzer purchased new snow-making machines to allow for better early-season coverage.
Inside Line:
Skip Taps for après and head to Thor’s Pizza for quality pies, microbrews and authentic Northern Idaho culture. Or head to Pucci’s for beers and St. Bernard for food later in the evening.
