Located only five miles north of the U.S. border, Red Resort is ideal for skiers looking to assimilate themselves into the Canadian powder scene. Perfectly spaced trees from top to bottom allow fresh snow to be conserved for days amid the apparently endless supply of runs that spread out from the conical peaks. Not an inch of vertical is wasted here. Dropping off the summit of either Granite or Red proper, skiers arrive at the base nearly 3,000 unbroken feet later. Check out the aptly named Cambodia, located at the end of Buffalo Ridge, or the Link’s Line, directly beneath the Motherlode chair. Orchards and Ledges are other favorites. Anyone looking for a backcountry stash will usually start at the bottom of Southern Comfort, where they can skin up to the summit of Mount Roberts (“Robbie”), the north-facing venue of the annual Canadian Open Freeskiing Finals.
What’s New:
Red is investing a cool million into existing chairlift infrastructure and other things that skiers mostly take for granted. A new brushing and pruning operation has cleaned up the runs for this winter.
Inside Line:
Never mind those dollar-at-par bargains—on December 19th and March 13th, you can ski at Red Mountain for free, no strings attached except to your mittens. Rafters is a great scene to integrate into Canadian ski culture, with live music on Fridays and Saturdays, and a jam session on Sundays for all those would-be musicians.
