Mount Hood Trail Map

The chances Mount Hood, an “active” volcano, will erupt in the next 30 years are estimated at 3 to 7 percent. If you can live with those odds, Hood averages 400-500 inches of annual snowfall. Last season’s total: a staggering 859 inches. Timberline is the most recognized of the three ski areas on Mount Hood, as its high-alpine glaciers hold snow well into the summer, but the terrain is frustratingly flat for deep Cascade pow. A better option in the winter is Mount Hood Meadows. Despite being slightly lower in elevation, Meadows is more protected from the unyielding winds, offering treeline bowls and pillows. Even lower down on the flanks of Hood is Skibowl. From steeps to chutes to hucks, Skibowl offers quality over quantity with the best terrain on Hood, much of which they light up as “America’s largest night ski area.” When it’s dumping and the snow levels are low, Skibowl is one of the few places in North America where you can slay pow under the lights.

Whats New: Government Camp and all three resorts offer rotating web specials on their respective sites and preseason deals on season passes. Inside Line: After it’s all tracked out at Meadows, duck into the God’s Wall gate at the bottom of the HRM park. Sidestep a couple minutes to Picnic Rock and drop in on Private Reserve for freshies.
