Skiing has a handful of places where its soul burns brightly, but perhaps nowhere does it shine brighter than at Mad River Glen. Sixty years of skiing history, a ski-hill ownership co-op, diehard local skiers with old-time Yankee ideals—MRG is more than a small Vermont ski area. It’s an icon.

There’s still no snowboarding here, snowmaking is a joke, and there is no place better for Eastern hardwood tree skiing. The legendary Single Chair carries 500 skiers an hour to the top—an often cold 15-minute ride—where tough glades and moguls await. MRG is best known for its quintessential log-dodging, with tight lines cut between maple trunks, through rock slots and over surprise waterfalls.

Whats New:
Last year marked the first season of the restored Single Chair—all $1.6 million worth. Of that total, $1.5 million has been donated by MRG skiers across the country to keep it running.

Inside Line:
The Single is the ticket to powder nirvana, so ride it first thing and ski Fall Line to Lift Line for a top to bottom shot of twisties and faceshots. Lap Paradise a few times for maximum pow potential, before heading to the trees. Follow the guy with duct taped pants and scratched helmet; he knows where he’s going.
