Over the course of the next several years, the Targhee’s sleepy base village will grow many times its current size, with additional lodging, restaurants, residential homes and condos. In the short-term, a new chairlift will be installed on Peaked Mountain to add another 1,000 acres in a zone currently being used for cat skiing. While the expansion plan has been approved by local officials, visitors to Targhee this winter won’t see much different from what they’ve enjoyed in the past. Construction on the new base area won’t start for at least another season. And so the status quo remains: some of the deepest snowfall in the country, empty liftlines, amazing Teton views, and a laidback community made up of families and former Jackson ski bums. Fred’s Mountain, the prominent face of the resort accessed by a high-speed quad, is the obvious starting point. From the top of this mostly low-angled peak, skiers can get 2,000-vertical-foot runs at a sustained pitch. After a few laps, head to either Blackfoot, a slow double that provides yet more powder and glades, or put your hiking shoes on for a trip to Mary’s Nipple. The Nipple leads to amazing backcountry, but bring your brain and safety gear. Big snow + steep uncontrolled terrain = avalanches.
What’s New:
Get a peek at the new terrain with a day of cat skiing on 1,000 acres of steep glades. A full day is $349.
Inside Line:
For the steepest inbounds shots, ride up the Sacajawea lift and head skier’s right. These quick but exciting chutes will help you get thirsty for beers later at the Trap Bar.
