With steep pitches covered with rocks, trees and chutes, it’s no surprise that Crested Butte has hosted the U.S. Extreme Skiing Championships for 17 years. On a powder day, the plan is simple: Fall line face shots in systematic order of patrol openings. Knowing the order of operations at C.B. will insure a day of untracked runs down some of the most complex terrain in North America.
From the top of the Silver Queen lift, head up the High Lift T-bar to access the Headwall and Angle Gully. If it has been windy, ski into Teocalli Bowl where the snow deposits. In Teo, traverse right into Wolf’s Lair for technical airs and straightline options. The next to open is the Banana and Funnel Chutes on the front side of the mountain, where the most consistent vertical can be found. Ski the trees between chutes for the best snow. Last to open is Third Bowl, accessed from the North Face T-bar. This 20-minute hike/traverse is where Warren Miller filmed last season, offering some of the most challenging terrain found anywhere. Get ready for mandatory air from the top gate.
What’s New:
For the first time since the early 1990s, Teo II, the big brother of Teocalli Bowl, opens with more cliff lines and chutes. The expansion adds 16 acres on avie controlled, National Forrest land. A 15- to 20-minute hike out will get you to the North Face Lift.
Inside Line:
The Bakery at the bottom of the mountain has dollar slices of pizza at 3 p.m., and PBR pints are $2.50. For drinks at night, go to the Eldo, “a sunny place for shady people”.
