Red Mountain Overview
The Motherlode might be one of the coldest rides in this guide due to its north-facing position. But the skiing from the top is pure heat. A slew of untouched stashes—inbounds, sidecountry, and backcountry—await, with 6,807-foot Granite Mountain acting as the launchpad. You don't need to go far to ski the archetypal funky lines of Red, as Link's Line directly beneath Motherlode will keep your legs, lungs, and curiosity occupied. As will the north-facing trees of Powder Fields and Pales, fluty lines of 1st through 3rd Slides, and Captain Jack's Trees. Of course, the ultimate backcountry gem remains the adjacent Mount Roberts, an easy 30-minute skin. Once there, technical lines waterfall from the top with cliffs, stumps and spines intersecting deep pow. More sidecountry options abound with Record Ridge and Kirkup. Undoubtedly, the Motherlode provides, as does Rafters, the iconic interior B.C. bar at the base, where quality conversation, hoola-hoopers and cold jugs of Kootenay thrive. —JOHN STIFTER
