Boulder - Backcountry Access forged a unique alliance with the Alaskan salmon fishing industry last week in a joint effort to raise funds for a regional avalanche forecasting agency. BCA will host the first annual CAIC "Avalanche Jam" on Sept. 6 at the American Mountaineering Center in Golden, Colo. This first annual fundraising party is to benefit the Boulder-based Colorado Avalanche Information Center, which provides avalanche forecasting and education to Colorado backcountry skiers, snowboarders and mountaineers. Kodiak Island Salmon will be one of the event's "Summit Sponsors," providing 250 pounds of premium sockeye salmon, which will be barbecued on location by a Kodiak Island representative.
"This might seem like an unlikely partnership," said BCA Marketing V.P. Bruce Edgerly, who spent several past summers commercial fishing out of Kodiak, the nation's largest island. "But it makes perfect sense for everyone involved." Kodiak Island's fishermen are interested in showcasing their premium quality sockeye salmon at the event, which is expected to draw a healthy, active "core" audience from Colorado's Front Range. They also hope to invite several key buyers from Front Range health food stores and restaurants. Of course, it doesn't hurt that Kodiak Island has a strong backcountry skiing community, due to its excellent terrain and a complete absence of ski lifts.
BCA's interest is to provide a strong draw for the event, and to support Kodiak Island's sustainable fishing practices. The fundraiser will be emcee'd by Denver radio personality Biff America, and will feature bluegrass music from the Ogallala String Band.
