Avalanche Workshop 2003

11/17/03

International snow gurus in Vancouver and Calgary for one-day public info sessions

If you ski in the backcountry, you won't want to miss this.. the Canadian Avalanche Association (CAA) is bringing some of the world's top avalanche gurus to Vancouver on Saturday, December 6th and to Calgary on Sunday, December 7th for a day-long $30 workshop open to the public.

Over eight hours, eight international avalanche experts will explore the nature of the risks faced in the backcountry and present the latest strategies and techniques for decision-making. The CAA is especially pleased to present Werner Munter, creator of the revolutionary "Reduction Method" of decision making, which is now widely used in Switzerland.

Speakers from Canada, Switzerland, France, Iceland, and the USA will explore lessons learned from last year, the challenges of uncertainty, terrain choices, and the human side of decision-making in the mountains. Click here for more detailed information on the workshop http://www.avalanche.ca/misc/BAW/BAWspeakers.htm speakers and topics.

Since 29 people died in avalanches in Western Canada last winter, the CAA has decided to make this pre-season workshop as accessible as possible by offering tickets for only $30. Tickets are available at the door - seating is limited, so come early. Doors open at 8:30 AM. The workshop runs from 9:00am to 5:00pm, with a one hour break for lunch and two 20 minute breaks.

For more information (including directions), check out the CAA’s online http://www.avalanche.ca/misc/BAW/index.html event overview at www.avalanche.ca or call (250) 837-2435.

For the city-specific line-up of speakers, see the posters for http://www.avalanche.ca/misc/BCskierBAW.pdf Vancouver or http://www.avalanche.ca/misc/CalgaryBAW.pdf Calgary.
