Junior Freeride World Champs Day One Recap
Day One Recap
Finals Webcast Live April 6, 10:00 a.m. MDT HERE.
A fantastic first day of Junior Freeride World Championships by The North Face took place today at Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort. A creamy five inches of new snow blanketed the steep Silver Fox face, providing perfect snow conditions on the venue.
The boys ski category was unable to finish due to fog, but the remaining skiers will complete their first runs at 8:30 a.m. MDT tomorrow. A LIVE webcast of the final runs on North Baldy is scheduled to start at 10:10 a.m. MDT on JuniorFreerideTour.com. Accumulative scores of the competitors’ runs on Silver Fox and North Baldy will determine the first world champions in each division (boys ski, boys snowboard, girls ski and girls snowboard).
The athleticism demonstrated in all categories was outstanding. Memorable moments began with skier Elisabeth Gerritzen of Switzerland’s fast and smooth run followed by a nice air at the bottom. Gerritzen had the second highest score in the girls ski division of 75.00. Besse Maud, also from Switzerland, earned the top score of 84.00 by executing a very fluid and controlled run down the fall line to bottom left side of the venue.
As the boy skiers prepared to start, the surrounding clouds began to thicken. The category was unable to finish due to the weather, but the skiers who did ski their runs put on a phenomenal show. Highlights included Sam Schwartz’s (USA) huge back flip in the middle of Silver Fox, Christian Kinnison’s (USA) creative across-fall line run with a solid air at the bottom and Rudy Collet’s (FRA) hard charge down North Chute with a straight line to the bottom.
