THE HITCHER: Thumbing it across the heart of Colorado to uncover the depths of ski culture

Words and Photos by Matt Hansen

Having spent most of my life skiing the classics in Utah, Wyoming and Montana, I found Ski Cooper to be the smallest resort I'd ever visited. Quite flat with just a few lifts, the Coop doesn't demand that much to get to the bottom. Still, skiing a small, family area was a nice break from the mayhem and mega-resorts of Summit County. Making it that much better was three inches of fresh powder and a beautiful, sun-shiny day. Traveling by thumb and vagrancy was starting to take its toll on my psyche. I felt myself getting further and further from what society considers "normal." Skiing the Coop helped me remember who I was.
