OUTDOOR RETAILER 2007: The latest and greatest from Utah

It might not have offered classic Wasatch powder, but the Backcountry Basecamp on Friday, Jan. 26, which kicked off this year’s Outdoor Retailer Winter Market Tradeshow, offered retailers—and privileged Powder magazine writers--an inside look at classic innovations hitting the shelves. We tried out as many skis and bindings as possible, taking them up the Millicent lift and even into the backcountry, before finally making it back to the Basecamp Party and a well-deserved (albeit 3.2) beer. For those who couldn’t make it there themselves, following is a sneak peak at what we unearthed (apart from unearthing a few rocks in the sub-average conditions).

BD SHOWS SOME WOOD: Black Diamond breaks a mold with its new ski lineup

Black Diamond’s roots are deeply embedded in the backcountry—climbing, alpinism and various earning turnisms. Which is why many skiers have traditionally placed BD skis into the telemark or AT-specific category, thinking they were skinny, lightweight tools for old bearded hippies who brewed tea from wild geraniums and aspen leaves.

WHISTLER HELI SKIING: A look at the largest daily heli-ski operation in the world

Whistler Heli-Skiing has been in operation for over 26 years, claiming the title of largest daily heli-ski operation in the world. With over 500 inches of powder per season, it is not hard to figure out why Whistler Heli-Skiing has experienced growth over the years. The terrain is expansive (429,936 acres) and variable, with steeps, trees, glaciers, and everything in between. Bottom line, Whistler Heli-Skiing combines deep powder and endless terrain with the ability to enjoy the nightlife of Whistler Village.

MOBILE CHAIR: Don’t forget to pack the lift

In the early 1960s Anatoly Pivarunas' portable ski lift was a sensation in the Soviet Union. The invention appeared in magazines and was used by skiers grateful to have a means up the hill. But the product was heavy and expensive and Pivarunas, living in the U.S.S.R., didn’t have infrastructure support to produce it on a larger scale.
