On Sunday, April 20, Aspen local Ted Mahon became the third person to climb and ski all 54 of Colorado’s 14,000-foot peaks. INTERVIEW: Crystal-Rose Lee on winning her first trophy
Crystal-Rose claims she’s never won a trophy of any kind ever in her life. Guess if you’re going to pick up your first, it might was well say “World Champion” on it.
SKIER DIES AT WORLDS: Aspen’s John Nicoletta killed in fall
The worst fears were realized at an athlete meeting held at the Sitzmark at 7:00 pm Alaska Standard Time. John Nicoletta, a professional skier out of Aspen, Colorado, is dead at 27.
AIR KOOTENAY: H/H and MSP Crew in the Selkirks
Ever wonder what a cork 7 off a 50-foot cliff looks like live in person? Or speculate how much preparation and time it takes to properly navigate through massive pillows with blind rollovers?
PUTTING ON THE MORITZ: Skiing In Davos
What can I say about St. Moritz that the front desk at the hotel didn’t already: We don’t belong here. Tall, proud, well-manicured with a shorn head, and proper, he looks down at the address on the crumpled and folded sheet of paper in my hands and says simply, “This place is not in St. Moritz. You know that, right?”
SELKIRKS: Abma, Hoji and Heim and MSP
Avalanches and capricious clouds aside, we have been skiing deep, smoky pow in late March at Selkirk Wilderness Skiing. The Helly Hansen crew comprised of the Canadian trio—Mark Abma, Eric Hjorleifson, and James Heim—is up here playing around in front of the MSP cameras for the week.
SLALOM BAR: Den evil in Lenzerheide
This is a story about skiing in Switzerland, but before we can get there, I need to tell you about the Slalom Bar. We were told the Slalom Bar is a good place. It is not. It is a fun place. A great place to take photos. And to do a shot. When there are more people, it is probably an amazing place to party. But I see nothing good coming from this den of evil in the shadow of the Rothorn.
DROPPING: Getting Lucky in the Chugach
How do you characterize the best run of your life? And what if it occurs in Alaska, with a helicopter as your mode of transport, on a 3,000-foot couloir filled with the immaculate powder, with good friends, under beautiful blue skies, surrounded by peaks that should exist only your dreams?
SECRET SWITZERLAND: Liberty and skiing in Lenzerheide
Ah the Swiss. Switzerland! A beautiful place full of beautiful people. Polite to a fault are the Swiss. Much like the Mormons, but less nosey. Far less. The Swiss have built a reputation of staying out of people’s business. War? Conflict? They want none of it.
LIBERTY AND LENZERHEIDE: Powder in the Swiss Alps
Laax is a barely a memory to me—a Jagermeister and beer induced blur of broken glass, flat light, vomit and German men dancing in their underwear in cramped bunk containers. But in my defense, I was there less than 24 hours after spending almost that long on a Swiss version of Planes, Trains and Automobiles...
LOST TRAIL: Two-Strokes and Spines in Montana
About an hour and a half south of Missoula, Montana, lies a ski area with some of Montana’s rowdiest inbounds terrain. Err, I mean Idaho. Actually, no, it is Montana.

For the first time in 25 years, Americans have swept the overall World Cup title. Lindsey Vonn secured the women’s title on Friday, March 14, a day after Miller wrapped up the men’s globe in Bormio, Italy. Vonn and McKinney met with media via conference call on Friday evening.
POWDER WEEK 2008: Fill It!!
Once again, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort played the perfect host to POWDER Week. With snow falling on Sunday and Monday, the steep and deep of Jackson’s inbounds and backcountry terrain answered the call.
GRAND TARGHEE: Meow Pow - A Cat Skiing Adventure
Slated as future inbounds terrain—just one piece of owner Geordie Gillett’s future vision—the 1,000 acres of guided cat-skiing terrain lies looker’s right of the Sacajawea lift below 9,700-foot Peaked Mountain.
COLD SMOKE POWDERFEST: Nelson, B.C.
Tucked up in the Kootenay region of interior British Columbia exists a spirit and appreciation for mountain culture unique in comparison to other towns of the mountain variety. With fun-loving Canadians and their eager approach to life in the mountains, big terrain, and tons of snow, the town of Nelson, British Columbia, acted as the host for the second annual Cold Smoke Powderfest.
MATCHSTICK: A Day with the MSP Crew in Crested Butte
It’s fitting that one of the premier action sports film production companies calls Crested Butte, Colorado, home with such strikingly big terrain engulfing the valley.
OFF PISTE ADVENTURE IN UTAH: Meet Me At The Y
At 7:15 we started the 3,200-foot, 40-degree climb from the bottom of the Y. There was already a group of two visible ahead of us, and within moments, a group of three skied down past us.
ESCAPING DISASTER: Mt. Waddington Avalanche
Since the piece about our avalanche experience ran in Powder this past month, I’ve had quite a few people reach out and ask me about what went down. Here’s my take along with some new photos and the only video taken on that day in BC.
