"3/20/05 - The tree line fades into tundra, which blurs into glacier. Suddenly we’re above it all and I capture my first aerial view of the Chugach. I’m speechless. I turn around for the 50th time sharing a giddy, ridiculous smile with Sierra and Evelyn. And that’s what it is—ridiculous. Huge, massive, monstrous, monolithic peaks protrude in every direction. Out every window, as far as the eye can see, it’s a sea of jagged white. It’s spectacular.
We make several passes on a particular peak. Ken narrows in on an orange flag (designating a pre-established Chugach Powder Guide route) hovers in and brings us in. We make contact, Virgil hops out, passes the door-holding responsibilities to me and unloads the heli basket. We all huddle in a pile on our gear as Virgil gives the go-ahead. Ken lifts off and I strain to keep my eyes on the chopper as a tornado of snow envelops our group. Rotor wash—who knew windswept snow pelting my face could be so fun?
The bird, along with the noise, fades off into the distance leaving us alone on this spectacular peak. And we really do feel alone. The only sign of civilization in sight is the flimsy orange flag. I’ve never felt smaller and I love it.

Salomon will send two women per year on their dream trips, supply all the necessary gear and pick up the tab, up to $12,000.
