Stop by our Clif Bar 1986 Winnebago Le Charo while we’re at your favorite resort and say hello. We’ll explain how we find and use oil from restaurants to power the RV, and how you can buy $2 Clif Bar Cool Tags to offset your drive to the ski area that day. We’ll also demo our solar-powered margarita machine! If you want to ski with us, just say so! We’re always ready to ride.
But Clif Bar SOS Winter Roadtrip activities don’t stop when the sun goes down. At night I will offer free viewings of the Alison Gannett Global Cooling Ski Adventure Show. Come share my ski adventure film clips and images from around the world—from Alaska to South Africa—while learning about climate change, global warming, snowpack forecasts and how you can help to Save Our Snow.
A recent United Nations report warns that due to the impact of global warming, downhill skiing could disappear completely at lower elevation resorts by the year 2030 and at higher elevation resorts by 2050. Already this winter the Alps have been virtually dry, leading to repeated ski race cancellations of the World Cup. For those of us who love winter sports, we can’t let these kinds of things happen.
The ski industry has long been forecasted to be a ‘canary in the coal mine’, and those predictions are now coming true. Not only are the economics of this multi-billion dollar industry in jeopardy, but consider for a moment the fact that snowmelt represents the sole source of drinking water for 80 percent of the people living on this planet.
Still, what Clif Bar and I are most excited about is being able to meet you, talk with you and share some of the simple things we all can do to help fight global warming. We’ll give you tips about buying renewable energy, eating locally and organic, using CFL light bulbs, reducing/reusing/recycling/composting, carpooling, switching to biodiesel or hybrids, and getting an energy audit.
We hope to see you out there on the slopes!
