SKI INDUSTRY PAYS TRIBUTE TO C.R. AT JACKSON HOLE
Ski Manufacturers and Powder Magazine Celebrate C.R. at Powder Week

Words: John Stifter

C.R. Johnson was here last year. In Jackson Hole for the annual Powder Week, he assisted 4FRNT’s Matt Sterbenz during the anti-ski test by promoting his pro model, the CRJ, and the rest of the 4FRNT lineup. And like everyone else at Powder Week and Jackson Hole, he was here to shred. Hard. And did he ever.

Johnson wasn’t able to make it to Powder Week 2010, yet his grateful and contagious energy was not forgotten. Whether it was C.R. charging into Corbet’s Couloir, trading off 360s with close friend Sterbenz, hopping from one skied-off pillow to the next in Mushroom Bowl, or slicing through untouched powder in Jackson’s fabled Granite Canyon, his presence was certainly impactful.

Ultimately though, he possessed this need to incessantly remind everyone how “blessed” and “lucky” we all were to be alive to be able to ski powder. We, like anyone who was “blessed” and “lucky” enough to spend a shred of time with C.R., knew that his passion and soul were of the sincere, rare kind. It wasn’t unbridled hyperbole, but a calm clairvoyance that provided peace of mind and heart. It was this genuine warmth that made him so endearing to so many people.

For that reason, the Powder Week 2010 crew circled at the top of the Jackson Hole tram yesterday morning. We grieved collectively in a moment of silence, the wind howling and the snow swirling. Then, as if C.R. commanded us on a loudspeaker, we clicked into our bindings, aligned atop Rendezvous Bowl, and collectively—75-plus Powder Week attendees—celebrated the life of C.R. by shredding 10 smoky inches of new snow.

We cried, we hugged, we smiled, we skied, and we howled a beautiful symphony. Thank you, C.R. We are so blessed and so lucky, my friend…

Although I did not know C.R. personally, I have heard his incredibly inspiring story time after time. Being able to overcome his accident was incredible. It was an honor to be a part of this celebration of life. Rest in peace C.R.

he's traveling with me this summer on my 4 month journey around the USA. Still can't believe he won't be in Truckee when I get home. Love to his family, Judy
