SEVEN SUNNY DAYS: Special Edition Little Red Book
By: Whitney Taylor
Ever wonder what goes into making a Matchstick Productions movie? All the hours, 6,480 hours to be exact, and funny memories that comes with a season of filming with some of the best athletes in the industry from Gulmarg to Whistler.
Now, Matchstick Productions has your answer. This year’s feature, Seven Sunny Days has a special edition bound book—only 5,000 were made—complete with the movie and a ticket to the details behind the movies segments, personal accounts from the athletes, and a glimpse into Shane McConkey’s journal.
This 75-page book features a peek into the bad weather, close calls with the police and killer pow days that make up a truly epic season.
“We've always wanted to offer the viewers something more than just a ski movie,” says Michael Hans of Matchstick. “With Hit List and Push, that meant adding a second DVD (the athlete-edited version) to the release. We wanted to try something different this year and liked the idea of going multi-media. A few surf films have dabbled into releasing books, and it seemed like a cool direction to go with skiing.”
The chapters are laid out by each different adventure that made the movie come together. The book covers everything from an account of how to survive a ski trip to Gulmarg; the comeback of CR Johnson written by C.R.; the hours, training, three different destinations and planning that went into Shane McConkey’s Bond segment; memories and adventure on the Whistler/Blackcomb infamous jump; Bralorne, British Columbia, through the eyes of Ingrid Backstrom; and a look into the journal of Shane McConkey in his epic B.A.S.E. jumping training trip in Norway.
“We found that in order to go really in-depth and explain the entire year exactly as it happened, our viewers needed to hear it straight from the mouths of the athletes and cinematographers,” says Hans. “As we started putting it all together, we realized it wasn't all going to fit into the 32-page program we give away on tour, so we started thinking about an actual book. It went from 20 pages to 30 and then 30 pages to 50. By the time it was finished, we hit nearly 80 pages, but we couldn't have told all those stories with any less.”
Not to mention the beautiful pictures that make the whole experience come alive.
“The book may be new and different, but we're really excited that people are giving it a chance and checking it out. It's one of those things that you really have to see to appreciate.”
This limited edition book is being sold at skimovie.com for $34.95 and is a perfect holiday gift for any skier or to add to any ski movie collection.
