JANUARY BARCODE: Superhero Photographer Christian Aslund's Gear

By: Jamey Voss
Product Photos: Morgan Meredith

Christian Aslund is a globe-trotting photographer with a quiver of camera gear. Be it post-invasion Iraq, post-tsunami Indonesia, or post-snowstorm Lebanon, Aslund bravely enters zones most are desperately trying to get out of. Mild-mannered ski photographer by winter, this is the gear Aslund relies on to help him capture the uncommonly vivid shots that grace the pages of Powder. We caught up with him recently (he was crewing on a Greenpeace boat on the high seas…seriously), and asked him what he packed along on his ski trips.

DAKINE SEQUENCE PACK $130
[541.386.3166; dakine.com]

One of the most important gadgets on the mountain is a comfy and functional backpack: preferably one like the Sequence, which has a nice ski carry system allowing me to keep my hands free while hiking around.

POC SKULL LIGHT XP HELMET $150
[603.738.1125; pocski.com

Last season I realized banging your head on the rocks hurts, and you get dizzy afterward and start to puke. Not a good thing. Life is a bit too precious. I found a helmet that makes me look, or at least feel, like a storm trooper and I love it.

POC LOBES GOGGLES $150
[603.738.1125; pocski.com

The Lobes goggle sort of go along with the helmet. It’s important to be stylish even when you are touring and no one can see you.

POC PRINT GLOVES $100
[603.738.1125; pocski.com

Thin, but warm, leather gloves with good grip so you don’t need to fiddle around and take them off. If you take off your gloves you risk losing them and that sucks.

WHITEOUT TOLSTOJ JACKET $610
WHITEOUT IVAN PANT $565

[(47) 66.77.24.00; whiteout.biz]

Legendary Superhero Frode Gronvold’s clothing brand. This outfit gives the impression of being either a Russian officer or someone with authority. It could help sneaking on the lifts without paying.

HOLGA MEDIUM FORMAT CAMERA $50
[lomography.com]

One of the best cameras ever produced, or actually the worst. It’s so bad with its plastic lens, vignetting, blur, distortion and light leaks that you have to love it. Thank you, China! Now get the hell out of Tibet.
