HIGH FLYING: Catching Up with Aerialist Dylan FergusonWhile he hasn’t been wearing his U.S. Ski Team uniform for long, aerialist Dylan Ferguson isn’t wasting any time trying to flip straight to the top. The 19-year-old Massachusetts native began skiing competitively 11 years ago at Waterville Valley, New Hampshire, under the watchful eye of freestyle coach, Nick Preston. While Dylan admits that he was terrified of aerials as a 10-year-old, he seems to have outgrown his fear and is making his presence known as a talented young gun on the U.S. Aerials Team. WATER RAMPING: Chris "Hatch" Haslock tells you howEver wondered how you gain access to the aerial ramps at the Utah Olympic Park splash pool--one of two aerial pools in the country, the other being at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, New York? To gain access to a training area with five jumps and three trampolines and some of the best coaching staff from the West, isn't as easy as paying to play. Because of the obvious dangers, athletes have to be signed up through a coaching program. WIND OF CHANGE: Mammoth gets direct flight from LAXIn the age of high fuel prices and horrid air travel, it’s rare to hear of excitement originating from the beleaguered airline industry. CHOCKSTONE COULOIR: Skiing the 'Tooths in JulyWith spring temperatures and fresh snow into June and for those willing to slog a little further, summer is merely an option in the Sawtooths. While most of the Custer County population was content drinking PBRs on the lake, we had our eyes set on the remaining snow in the Chockstone Couloir at the northwest end of Redfish Lake. NEW KID ON THE BLOCK: Folsom Custom Skis - Built By The CustomerWith each coming season, a new crop of upstart independent ski companies emerges. A few make it for the long haul—namely, Armada and 4FRNT, while others are quick to burn out. One company debuting this year is Folsom Custom Skis. Based out of Boulder, Colorado, Folsom offers handmade skis with input directly from the consumer. Folsom is going public after spending the last four years developing and testing their skis. UNCHARTED TERRITORY: Skiing in Georgia With Hans Saari Memorial FundA native of Washington State, 27-year-old Jason Thompson skied for the first time at age 12 and when he moved to Bozeman, Montana, for college, he traded in soccer cleats for ski boots. With the help of the Hans Saari Memorial Fund, Thompson and his ski pals, Seth Waterfall and Tyler Jones, traveled beyond the mountains of Montana to explore relatively unknown ski terrain. JOSSI WELLS: Catching up with the Kiwi PhenomJossi Wells was having the season of his life. With it, Heal the Snow representatives take to the road to set an example of how to live a sustainable ski lifestyle. CAMP WASATCH: Snow Not NeededWe all knew Salt Lake City is special, not because of the particular religious sect here, but because of the mountain access. It is possible to spend a morning at work in downtown SLC, and then zip on up to the mountains for an afternoon run. Not too many metropolitan areas can claim that. But did you know the activities are even more vast and exciting in the summer? ROXY POP DROP: Challenging Girls at Aerial RampsThe Roxy Pop Drop, presented by Axis Freeride and SheJumps on June 26-28, was a chance for girls ages 7 to 30 to have fun and learn some jumping skill at the Olympic Park splash pool in Park City, Utah. BENCHETLER BETA: Chris Checks in From MexEric, Pep, and myself just arrived home from an awesome trip to Mexico. We decided it was time to do a trip away from the snow that would give Pollard a rest from editing, and at the same time, document some third-world traveling with another one of the crews passions, surfing. SOUTH AMERICA: 2008 Season Commences in ChileLong have the resorts in North America been closed now and your skis surely have dust on them or maybe even some rusty edges. If you didn’t get enough time on the sticks this past winter, it’s time to start thinking South America. The season in Chile is off and running. The northern sections of the country have seen amazing coverage right from the get go. ![]() GMD DISPATCH 8.0: Going HomeAs we finished our last 3.2 High Life atop the ridge above Alta’s High Rustler, a group of friends and I watched the sun dip behind the grandiose peak of Mount Superior. GMD DISPATCH: Alta, Utah: Population 397As we came around Cardiff Pass, the sun, just beginning to rise above Grizzly Gulch, the final aspect of our route to Mount Superior came into view. GMD DISPATCH : Week 6 - When Things Fall ApartSnow in absurd abundance has begun to cause paradoxes with my life. Things seem to be falling apart. GMD DISPATCH: Week 5 - The Busy Season Is HereWhen we woke up Saturday morning, we knew it was going to be a unique day in Alta. Bombs rattled the Goldminer’s Daughter dining room windows as Interlodge kept those inside anxious. GMD DISPATCH: Week four—enjoying the good lifeOn Saturday morning, after I raced down from my breakfast shift at Alta’s Goldminer’s Daughter restaurant, I was elated to see that patrol still wasn't letting people load the chair, despite the time nearing 10 o'clock. I hadn't missed anything yet, though the lines for Wildcat and Collins were so long they morphed into each other and pushed skiers to the fringe of the parking lot. GMD Week 3: The Season BeginsIt was a typical opening day, while the skiing wasn’t great, everybody there was just happy to see the season officially start. GMD DISPATCH: Still WaitingSince moving in to the Goldminer’s Daughter on the 15th, the scene hasn’t changed. Beyond the beers chilling on the sill, a few cars sit parked on dry pavement, and the Wildcat Chair is motionless above a patchy layer of snow. GMD DISPATCH: Rookie entering the Promised LandOn Thursday I moved into the Goldminer’s Daughter. The lodge sits about 50 yards from the Collins chair at Alta, Utah. I’m going to spend my winter here, in a small hotel room that has suffered the abuse of hosting young, core skiers for years. |
