Matchstick Productions rode solid editing, and cohesive story line and strong performances by a topnotch stable of skiers to win their fifth PVA Movie of the Year title. MSP’s 2006 release Push rose to the top of the most competitive field ever assembled for the Powder Video Awards.
Eight different movie companies won awards in the 10 nomination categories, highlighted by Mark Abma taking home his second Best Male Performance award for his diverse segment in Push, and newcomer Grete Eliassen winning Best Female Performance for her energetic part in Poor Boyz Productions Ski Porn.
MSP was the only company to win more than one of the nomination categories. Rory Bushfield also took a trip to the stage to claim Best Air, Manmade for his switch double backflip, shot in Whistler, B.C.
Teton Gravity Research athlete Seth Morrison took Best Air, Natural for his massive high speed front flip in Bella Coola, B.C., appearing the TGR’s ’06 release Anomaly. Anomaly also supplied the winner of the Breakthrough Performance, a non-nominee award. Ian McIntosh beat out a tough field of newcomers, including Sammy Carlsen (Ski Porn, Push), and Wiley Miller (Photo [Play], by Theory 3) with an inspiring string of first descents in the Jackson Hole backcountry capped by his first ever trip to Alaska.
Several Scandanavian companies made appearances on the stage this year. Sverre Liliequist took Line of the Year with a creative and ultra steep mini-golf line in Five O’Clock News by Swedish Posse. Norwegian filmer Jon Hatveit and skier Andreas Hatveit won Best P.O.V with a perfectly executed follow cam over a road gap. Jon Larsson of Free Radicals Snowblind won Best Powder.
Respect by Wink Inc. claimed two of the most hair-ball awards, winning Worst Slam with an Alaska Avalanche that swept away Kaj Zackrisson, and Full Throttle, the other non-nominee award, by Seb Michaud. Corey Vanular of Level 1 Productions Long Story Short took Best Jib with his 810 disaster.
Rattle Can Films won the newest PVA category, Best Story, with their documentary The Line. Best Story was a last-minute addition to the awards, and is intended reward a growing segment of ski movies that offer viewers something beyond straight ski porn. Other nominees were Teton Skiing, Legends of the Fall Line by Piton Productions, and Mountain Town, also for Rattle Can Films.
