Words: Sam Pelletier
Winter is upon us. In fact, a select few of you lucky shredhorts have even made some early-season turns. Colorado, Utah, Montana, Mammoth, and Wyoming have all received different doses of the white stuff. And today, New Englanders woke to the first snow of the season. On top of that, powder is forecasted to hit every corner of the world in the coming days. But it won’t be landing
just in the mountains—it’s headed right for your mailbox. Pow!
The November issue of
POWDER hit newsstands today, just in time for the unofficial kickoff of winter. Pep Fujas is our cover boy (his second
Powder cover for all you fantasy dorks counting at home), shredding through a picture-perfect Portillo powder plume. Inside, you’ll find another gallery full of the world’s best ski photographs and our annual Resort Guide with everything you need to know to plan your ultimate ski trip.
Our features this month are all about keeping it real. We take a look inside British Columbia’s struggle to maintain its unique identity as developers move in on its pristine wilderness in Smithers and Shames, B.C., respectively. We sent our investigators up to “Shredville” to find out firsthand if mom and pop hills can continue to operate next to slick mega-resorts.
Features Editor Porter Fox shows us why Idaho, featuring 18 ski areas spread across 30 mountain ranges, is the place to go to have endless backcountry powder all to yourself. Idaho may not get as much snow as other destinations, but it also doesn’t get the crowds, leaving more for the insatiable powder hounds who are already in on the secret.
The new issue also features Retallack Lodge’s Karl the Gnarl, the world’s only cat driver/poet. Cody Townsend fills us in on how to ski Squaw’s newly renamed McConkey’s in a manner that would make its namesake proud, and we explore why Grete Elliassen and Sarah Burke can kick your ass on and off the slopes. We also profile a classic Montana couloir and go behind the scenes with Josh Berman on a Level 1 film shoot.
John Symms and the Jaded Local are back with their monthly columns, and we have Callum Pettit in his own words in our latest “Voice.”
Powder in the mountains,
Powder in your mailbox. Doesn’t get much better than that.
