Crist Goes Bald For Charity

by Tess Weaver

Given the choice between skiing an hour with Reggie Crist, former World Cup downhiller and 2002 X Games skiercross champion, or shaving him bald, a Queenstown bidder opted for the Bic.

In an auction kicking off the 50K of Coronet Peak, a16-hour overnight endurance race (New Zealand's version of 24 Hours of Aspen), Crist, along with teammates Brett Dueter and Brian Daluiso, shed their locks to raise more than $5,000 for Cure Kids, a child health research foundation.

"Brett was already a proud member of the Hair Club for Men and Brian's certifiably bald," says Crist. "I guess I should have raised the price."

A woman by the name of Bubbles Sarofim made the generous bid. "She never collected on the hour of skiing," says Crist. "I think she just wanted to watch a public head shaving at the base of Coronet."

Team Switzerland took first, skiing 124 laps of Coronet Peak's M1, followed by Team Scotland and Team New Zealand. Team USA, with their new aerodynamic look, nabbed fourth. Team USA, led by captain Nicole Pelletier, skied 123 laps and won the woman's race—long hair and all.

In the end, the event raised over $200,000 for Cure Kids.
