The Gathering at Red Mountain
John Eaves and the Blues Riders, with John Falkiner, cap the Clambin reunion

In the 70s and 80s, a group of skiers congregated in Clambin, a tiny village outside Verbier, Switzerland, where they rewrote the book on skiing and ski journalism. In many ways, the ski industry was we know it today was shaped by the philosophies and antics of Mark Shapiro, Ace Kvale and John Falkiner. In early March, these visionaries and several of the friends who helped influence Clambin, descended upon small, historic Red Mountain, British Columbia for a reunion of sorts. “We’re not really sure what we’re doing here,” Shapiro said more than once during the three-day outing. What they did was eat, drink, share photos and stories, and ski. A lot. You can read more about that in the September issue of Powder.

On the final night, after a breathtaking slideshow presentation feature the works of Shapiro, Kvale, Falkiner, Dave Heath, Pat Morrow, Tom Ericson, Mattias Giraud, Derek Frankowski, Francois Marseille and Paolo Tasi, a band featuring Canadian freestyle legend John Eaves and CMH president Walter Bruns played to a tight crowd in Rafters. Here’s a clip from that show.
