Movers and Pushers - Mount Hood's Timberline hosts a five-day camp that aims to make a better park

Last week, snowcat drivers from around the world landed at Mount Hood for Timberline’s annual Cutter’s Camp. Acting as a pseudo brain trust of snow movers that aim to make safer and greater terrain park features, the camp, now in its 11th year, is spread over five days. Drivers share ideas and learn new building techniques in the classroom and on-hill with different building exercises.

Yet the U.S. Teamers are not jocks. They are skiers learning new tricks at their own pace so they can be at the forefront of their idea of "progression" or as I prefer to call it, “getting better at skiing.”

Junk In The Truck: Eastern Collective Cables - Vermont’s Eastern Collective strikes gold

Matt Benedetto quit his job. Last fall, while hanging with friends in Burlington, Vermont, he was looking at the generic white iPhone cord that comes standard with every Apple device. He thought he could make it better. A few weeks later, he had a multi-colored cable and promptly began selling them on his site as he’d done with countless products in the past. What happened next was unexpected.

All Time: Kingfisher Heli - Finding the pinnacle of life as a skier

When I moved to San Clemente to work for Powder, I drove up to Mammoth to meet with The Jaded Local. In a poached hot tub, with Tecates in hand, I told him I was going to wait as long as I could before going heli skiing.

“Why?” he asked. “It’s, like, the safest thing you can do.”

“I don’t know,” I said. “I’m afraid it might be the best skiing I ever do and it’d suck to have everything else come second to that moment when I’m only 24.”

New Hampshire’s Whaleback Closing its Doors - The small ski area with a big reputation is closing due to insurmountable debt

In a letter posted this morning on Whaleback’s website by Dybvig and co-owners Frank Sparrow and Dylan Goodspeed, the small ski area in the Live Free or Die State is closing its doors.

“Unfortunately, the positive gains that we have made over the years have not been enough to overcome our debt,” says the letter. “We have tried numerous avenues to recapitalize the business to put ourselves on surer footing without success. Our only option at this point is to close.”
